Birka Cruises runs 22 hour cruises from
Stockholm to Mariehamn and back, seven days a week,
with the passenger ship M/S Birka Stockholm. Apart
from our 22 hour cruises we also arrange a number of
weekend cruises during summer time, and special
cruises at Christmas and New Years Eve.
Since May 28 2008 Birka Cruises is a subsidiary to Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö.
Birka Stockholm is owned by Birka Line and operated by Birka Cruises. The vessel was constructed in 2004 by Aker Finnyards at Rauma, Finland at a cost of €155 million, under the former name Birka Paradise, chosen after a competition of more than 3500 proposals.
The interior design of the cruise ship MS Birka was made by Birka Line, Aker Finnyards and Deltamarin. The vessel was planned as a typical cruise ship, without the car deck, available on similar ships. Birka is considered environmentally friendly with the new innovations used in her construction (exhaust and closed sewage treatment systems). MS Birka Stockholm's hull was intended in a way to optimise the impact on the sensitive archipelago routes. Birka Line received the vessel on November 8, 2004. The official naming ceremony was on November 10, 2004 in Stockholm. Mrs Arja Saijonmaa, a Finnish singer, actress and political activist, acted as godmother. The first voyage of Birka Paradise started on November 11, 2004. The cruise ship was renamed Birka Stockholm in January 2013 and the colors of the vessel were also changed from blue, yellow and red to just blue and yellow.
