Second Vista ship of a serie of four. The Oosterdam is a new name in HAL-history. The only ship before with the Ooster- prefix was a freighter the 1913 built Oosterdijk. Traditional all passenger ships of the HAL carry a Dutch name with the "- dam" suffix. At the time the company operated freighters these ships were given the "-dijk" suffix to their Dutch names.
The Oosterdam naming ceremony was taken place on July 29-2003 during the celebrations of the 130 year anniversary of the HAL, in the city where the company was founded, Rotterdam. Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet was the godmother of the Oosterdam.

On the same  festivities A. Kirk Lanterman, Chairman and CEO, of Holland America Line, and since 1970 working for the HAL, became an Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau, an honor bestowed by Her Royal Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The highly coveted decoration was presented to Lanterman by Ivo Opstelten, Lord Mayor of Rotterdam, aboard the ms Oosterdam during inaugural festivities in the city of Rotterdam. The Queen's sister, Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet, served as the godmother of the Oosterdam and was the guest of honor at the event
