Sept.18-2015 Silversea Cruises today announced it will move Silver Cloud to its luxury expedition fleet in November 2017. Destined mostly for polar waters, the elite 296-guest ship that launched the ultra-luxury cruise line will be converted into an ice-class ship during an extensive refurbishment scheduled to start in August 2017.As an expedition ship, the all-suite Silver Cloud will accommodate 260 guests and also sail on itineraries to non-polar regions. When sailing Arctic and Antarctic itineraries, the guest complement will be restricted to 200.In order to bring the ship up to ice-class standards, the steel exterior was extensively reinforced, and the bulbous bow was replaced with a reinforced ice-class bulb to allow for navigation in polar waters. Other polar-related enhancements included the installation of sonar for underwater detection of ice and other impediments, and new windows resistant to polar temperatures.

Nov. 16-2016 Exactly one year from today, on Nov. 16, 2017, Silver Cloud will embark on its first voyage as an expedition ship, to Antarctica.

Oct. 2017

Valletta-based Palumbo Malta Shipyard (PMS) has completed the complex conversion of Silversea’s pioneering, 1994-built SILVER CLOUD from a standard luxury cruise ship into an ice-class expedition cruise ship.

Nov. 2017 Silversea’s Silver Cloud has experienced a mechanical malfunction that forced the ship to cancel its inaugural expedition voyage to Antarctica, a cruise line representative tells. The ship has since returned to Puerto Madryn to perform the necessary repairs.
All guests are safe and comfortable onboard and will be repatriated as soon as possible,” the cruise line said in a statement
Next cruise, departing Ushuaia on December 1, is scheduled to operate regularly
