Silversea Cruises today announced it will
move Silver Cloud to its luxury expedition fleet in November 2017.
Destined mostly for polar waters, the elite 296-guest ship that launched
the ultra-luxury cruise line will be converted into an ice-class ship
during an extensive refurbishment scheduled to start in August 2017.As
an expedition ship, the all-suite Silver Cloud will accommodate 260
guests and also sail on itineraries to non-polar regions. When sailing
Arctic and Antarctic itineraries, the guest complement will be
restricted to 200.In order to bring the ship up to ice-class
standards, the steel exterior was extensively reinforced, and the
bulbous bow was replaced with a reinforced ice-class bulb to allow for
navigation in polar waters. Other polar-related enhancements included
the installation of sonar for underwater detection of ice and other
impediments, and new windows resistant to polar temperatures.
Nov. 16-2016 Exactly one year from today, on Nov. 16, 2017, Silver Cloud will embark on its first voyage as an expedition ship, to Antarctica.
Silversea’s Silver Cloud has experienced a mechanical malfunction that forced the ship to cancel its inaugural expedition voyage to Antarctica, a cruise line representative tells. The ship has since returned to Puerto Madryn to perform the necessary repairs.
