At the end of 2020 the 1963 built Hurtigruten coastal express LOFOTEN will be withdrawn from the Bergen>Kirkenes>Bergen route.
March 5- 2019 Hurtigruten’s Loften is celebrating 55 years today since the ship launched service from Bergen in 1964.During these 55 years, the ship has sailed approx. 4.3 million nautical miles or 8 million kilometers. According to Hurtigruten, the original Burmeister & Wain main engine has passed a record 325 000 operating hours.Built by Akers Mek. Verksted in Oslo, the Lofoten was delivered to Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab – VDS– on Feb. 27, 1964.The ship has had different owners and there have been different funnel logos during these years, but the Lofoten has mainly been part of the coastal service between Bergen and Kirkenes all these years.Today the ship belongs to Hurtigruten, and to emphasize her history, sails with the original VDS funnel logo as the company’s first ship, the D/S Vesteraalen, had in 1893.

Is in operation on the Coastal Voyage during the winter months and voyages around the Svalbard Archipelago throughout the summer

The line is also introducing its new Vintage Era Voyages in 2016, which takes place aboard the MS Lofoten, the oldest ship in Hurtigruten’s fleet. Guests will be taken “back in time”, as the vessel has been fully restored to its 1960s vintage décor, offering several lounges, a separate panorama deck, and “old style” dining menu served from silver platters. Guests can join activities and excursions not available on regular coastal sailings including fishing from the deck, trivia, auctions and a special ice swimming excursion. Also, because the MS Lofoten is smaller than other Hurtigruten ships, the vessel will visit all 34 ports on the Classic Coastal Voyages route, as well as several other ports.

A lot of round trip passengers have been sailing with her for decades. Her original main engine  is still in operation probably the longest running diesel engine on a vessel in the world. Latest reports (2016) says the engine has been running more than 300 000 hrs!
